Many challenges accompany the urban remodel. According to city building regulations,
the existing structure cannot be completely razed and rebuilt; the original footprint must remain. The urban house must be configured
to provide privacy from the
street and adjacent residences, yet allow natural light to illuminate the interior. Beautiful vistas, such as trees and sky,
Portland landmarks, the ocean, and Mount Washington must be accentuated. Unpleasant views, such as cars, other dilapidated colonials,
and the vinyl siding of the next-door neighbor's house, must be minimized. The redesigned home should be an aesthetically engaging
and sensitive addition to the urban environment. While honoring the spirit of the neighborhood and alluding to the era during which
the surrounding homes were built, the home design must be delivered with a contemporary edge.
